The Carlsbad Desalination Project is a state-of-the-art facility that will produce 50 million gallons per day of industrial reverse osmosis water when construction is completed near the end of 2015. Although RO membrane desalination on a large scale like this is almost unheard of in the United States, it has been used throughout the world for years. Desalination has made great strides just in the last decade. It has been used in the more arid, coastal regions around the world, in more than 21,000 facilities in over 120 countries. Arid, coastal regions are the most cost-effective and efficient choice because they are dry areas and they have easy access to the ocean, which is the largest water source in the world, to produce drinking water. Areas such as the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Middle East have seen an exponential growth in reverse osmosis membrane desalination. Saudi Arabia is home to the world’s largest desalination plant.
